Letters, 1889-1896, from famiy in Charlottesville, Va., to Marie Wohlbrück Burgess, discuss family news, Marie Wohlbruck's marriage to Charlie Burgess, conflict between Marie and her mother and stepfather, exhanges of gifts and pictures, work and the search for work, renting and farming in Albemarle County near Monticello, and economic hard times. Two letters from Charlie Burgess to his wife, Marie, 1895, from Roanoke and Lynchburg, Va. discuss difficulty in finding employment and continued travels in search of work. Letters from family members in New Jersey discuss family conflicts and problems including difficulties between the Wohlbrück girls and their husbands, conflict between Marie and her mother, search for renumerative work, health, and leisure activities. Specific topics mentioned briefly include an 1892 revival in Elizabeth, N.J., and a dance at Madison Square Garden; work at a Charlottesville knitting mill [Charlottesville Woolen Mills?]; and Bamberger's and Hahne & Co. department stores. Two photographs of Marie Wohlbrück, 1889, are included.

Charlottesville Woolen Mills

Located in Charlottesville, Va. and begun as a woolen mill during the Civil War, the company occupied the site of an earlier cotton carding and spinning mill. Incorporated in 1868 by H.C. Marchant, the mill did carding and fulling for the local domestic market and produced a coarse grade of woolen cloth. Later it produced flannels, satinets, kerseys and cassimeres. It later specialized in uniform cloth, including cadet greys, venetians, and kersey overcoating. The mill operated until 1965. ...
